Some of you may have read the story I posted called “A Moment That’s Haunted Me”, about the girl in the village near St. Michel who died before JT could get to her with the medicine we sent (see full story at https://thehaitifund.org/2020/02/28/a-moment-thats-haunted-me/). There ended up being a number of pretty cool “God things” that resulted from that interaction.
The girl lived in a remote area called Bout Savane, about a 25 minute drive outside of St. Michel. The church she was from was actually a Baptist church; there had never been a Church of Christ in Bout Savane before. Their connection with the St. Michel Church of Christ was the fact that Rolin’s wife was originally from Bout Savane, and most of her family still lives out there, so Rolin knew the preacher at this Baptist church and had actually been studying with him for quite some time.
So while we were in St. Michel for the November medical trip, JT
ended up studying some more with this Baptist preacher – and
the preacher asked to be baptized that
same weekend.
Over the course of the next month or so, JT and Rolin continued
studying with the preacher and with the four main church leaders/elders
– and all four of them were baptized as well.
Rolin has continued working with this congregation – which changed it’s
name to Bout Savane Church of Christ – and by the time Jim Cain, Johnny Israel
and I went back in January, about 3 dozen new souls had been baptized
into Christ, and added to the Lord’s church at Bout Savane.
The three of us (plus JT, Bwa, and Rolin) spent about half a day
worshipping and fellowshipping with these Christians at Bout Savane – hopefully
encouraging them, and definitely being encouraged by them.
The photo above (at top) is of JT and Rolin leading singing at the make-shift church “building” in Bout Savane, which basically consists of one cinder-block wall, three wooden poles, and a tin roof/overhang (think: carport). The photo below is of JT standing with several of the new Christians who had been baptized between November and January.
(By the way, Jim Cain tells us that Bout Savane literally means “end of the swamp” – which is pretty descriptive of where it’s located at – adds a whole new meaning to the word “remote” – makes getting to St. Michel look easy by comparison.)
