Trip 22 – A Humbling Moment in the Village of Jeremie
When we first came out to Chambellan in 2015, JT had taken us to a small church in the village of Jeremie on a Monday afternoon. We had met with the preacher and a few of the members, and had a short service with them.
On this trip, JT took us back to that same church for their Sunday night worship service. Prior to Jim Cain getting up to speak, the preacher from that church – who I just barely remember from 21/2 years ago – was leading the congregation in some songs. At one point he stopped in between songs and, before starting the next one, he looked at me and had this huge smile on his face, and then gave me the “thumbs up” sign. I had no idea why, and I was both puzzled and curious as to what that was supposed to mean…until he started the congregation in the next song…and then I got it.
They whole church began singing “Se pou fèb la di mwen fò“ – it was the “Hosanna” song that our Mission Team first brought to Haiti 3 years ago – I had totally forgotten until that moment, but JT had had me lead that song when we were at this church in 2015.
We’ve seen this many times, in many different ways, with the children in Haiti, but I’d never seen it with an entire congregation of adults – their way of saying to us: “We remember you, and it matters to us that you come.”
