One Pretty Cool Thing

One thing I thought was pretty cool – every afternoon, the See Him Ministries staff opens up the gate for all the neighborhood children to come in.  Two staff members (a male and female), designated as Community Outreach Directors, teach a Bible lesson to the children, sing some songs with them, do some organized activities, and then turn them loose to play soccer or whatever else they want to do.

Typically each day when we get back from doing the medical clinics we’ve got about an hour or so before dinner time, so I’ve been going out and playing with the kids for a while each day – absolutely the most incredibly peaceful, relaxing, and joyous way to wind down the afternoon.

Like most Haitian children we’ve met, these kids are incredibly relational – very quickly you become almost completely unaware of the language difference, as they find all kinds of creative ways to play and interact with you.

(Photo above:  Two little girls who quickly got my attention – just fell in love with these two!)

As an interesting aside:  Almost all the staff at See Him Ministries, including most of the leadership staff and some of the medical staff, all grew up in a Christian orphanage that use to exist near here that has since closed – it was the place that I first came to in 1990 with Terry Cagle (and I’m pretty sure Cynthia Hudson came there also).

  1. […] Him medical staff and leadership team who grew up in the orphanage I referenced in a previous post (https://thehaitifund.org/2021/10/12/one-pretty-cool-thing/).  I mentioned to her that I had visited that orphanage in 1990 – she laughed and told me […]

Just for the record, that orphanage is not really “closed.” We are in the process of phasing that work out but we still have 10 kids that we work with. They are now in private homes with Haitian house parents (a much better environment) all of whom have connections with either the Cap Haitien Children’s Home or the preacher training school nearby at Galman. The former orphanage property continues to be used as a school, widows home and for other activities including the church that is located there.
