KY Floods – Volunteers Desperately Needed

According to our contacts in Eastern Kentucky, “volunteers are DESPERATELY needed” in the aftermath of the horrific flooding that killed at least 39 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Disaster relief efforts are being staged out of the Church of Christ in Fleming-Neon, KY, only about a 4 hour drive from Greenville.  Unless something changes, my current plan is to leave here about 4am Monday morning, help out all day Monday and Tuesday, and be back here by 9pm Tuesday night – please contact me if you have any interest in carpooling, or would just like further information about volunteer needs and opportunities.

I am often asked what exactly the volunteers do on these kinds of trips.  If you have any special skills in the areas of carpentry, construction, or tree removal that’s awesome – but even if you’re completely unskilled (like me!) – there’s still a boatload of volunteer needs.  This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here are a few examples:

  • Unloading supply trucks as they come in
  • Cleaning up, gutting, repairing, and rebuilding homes
  • Going out to check out job sites
  • Helping distribute supplies
  • Helping cook for volunteers and the community
  • Working in laundry trailer doing laundry for the community
  • Data entry and paperwork
  • Praying with families
  • Lots of miscellaneous other stuff!

As always, please keep these families as well as the volunteers in your prayers.
