Flooding in Kentucky – Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed in the aftermath of the catastrophic flooding that hit Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia early last week (and yes, those are submerged cars in the photo above).

Disaster relief efforts are being staged out of the Main Street Church of Christ in Pikeville, KY, only about a 4 hour drive from Greenville.  My current plan is to leave here sometime this Sunday afternoon (March 2) but my return date is flexible, so shoot me back an email if you have any interest in carpooling, or would just like further information about volunteer needs and opportunities.

I am often asked what exactly the volunteers do on these kinds of trips.  If you have any special skills in the areas of carpentry, construction, or tree removal that’s awesome – but even if you’re completely unskilled (like me!) – there’s still a boatload of volunteer needs.  This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here are a few examples:

  • Unloading supply trucks as they come in
  • Cleaning up, gutting, repairing, and rebuilding homes
  • Going out to check out job sites
  • Helping distribute supplies
  • Helping cook for volunteers and the community
  • Working in laundry trailer doing laundry for the community
  • Data entry and paperwork
  • Praying with families
  • Lots of miscellaneous other stuff!

As always, please keep these families as well as the volunteers in your prayers.
