One
of the really great things about being in Haiti is that every day is a “Ferris
Buehler” day – a day in which you’ve had an impossible number of incredible
experiences, one right after another after another after another…and at the end
of the day you think about when you got up this morning and it seems like at
least two days ago.
Today
was a hot, hectic, strenuous day of non-stop activity from a logistics
standpoint, and we got to see a lot of things I’d never seen before (like the
HFHC Earthquake Relocation Center at Mission Cross).
Since
we didn’t have as much interaction with the children today there aren’t as many
“favorite moments,” but I do have four “highlights of the day.”
Highlight #1: Getting to see Yol-Dericka again, and seeing the
smile on her face when I pull out the doll my family has sent for her.
Highlight #2: Getting to visit the children in Cite Soleil
when school is actually in session – an extremely rare event, even for HFHC
teams.
Highlight #3: After we get to Thomazeau and unload all the
supplies, the PAs, nurses, and pharmacists start counting pills and organizing
pharmaceuticals for tomorrow’s clinic.
More or less by default, I once again end up with the absolute BEST job
of all: The two little girls – Melinda
and Nyika, the first arrivals at the new orphanage – both want me to pick them
up and hold them, so I walk around with them in my arms for awhile and then sit
and rock them while they cuddle on my lap.
Highlight #4: Team
devotional under the stars, up on the roof of the TTC. Breathtaking (as was the sunset). You can literally see for miles and miles in
every direction.
Ok. Big, long, crazy day tomorrow. Brain’s shutting down for tonight.
