Selma AL Tornado Relief – Volunteers Desperately Needed

According to our contacts in Selma, Alabama “volunteers are desperately needed” in the aftermath of the destructive tornado that ripped through their town a few days ago.

There are many families in Selma that need help with their homes, and with supplies and everyday needs.  This is an especially low income town, and many families have no insurance.

Disaster relief efforts are being staged out of the Houston Park Church of Christ in Selma.  My current plan is to drive down early Friday morning, and then return to Greenville sometime over the weekend – shoot me back an email if you have any interest in carpooling, or would just like further information about volunteer needs and opportunities.

I am often asked what exactly the volunteers do on these kinds of trips.  If you have any special skills in the areas of carpentry, construction, or tree removal that’s awesome – but even if you’re completely unskilled (like me!) – there’s still a boatload of volunteer needs.  This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here are a few examples:

  • Unloading supply trucks as they come in
  • Cleaning up, gutting, repairing, and rebuilding homes
  • Going out to check out job sites
  • Helping distribute supplies
  • Helping cook for volunteers and the community
  • Working in laundry trailer doing laundry for the community
  • Data entry and paperwork
  • Praying with families
  • Lots of miscellaneous other stuff!

As always, please keep these families as well as the volunteers in your prayers.
